Cambodia Travel Doc Part 03
The Kingdom of Cambodia (formerly Kampuchea is known), a country in Southeast Asia, with a population of over 14 million people. The kingdom's capital and largest city is Phnom Penh. Cambodia was the successor of a once powerful Hindu and Buddhist Khmer Empire, which ruled most of the Indochinese Peninsula between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries. A citizen of Cambodia is usually identified as "Cambodian" or "Khmer," though this relates closely to ethnic Khmer. MostCambodians are Theravada Buddhists of Khmer extraction, but the country also has a substantial number of predominantly Muslim Cham, as well as ethnic Chinese, Vietnamese and animist hill tribes. The country borders Thailand to the west and northwest, Laos, Vietnam, north-east and east and south-east. To the south lies the Gulf of Thailand. The geography of Cambodia is dominated by the Mekong river (colloquial Khmer: Tonle Thom or "great river") and the Tonle Sap ( "theFresh water lake "), an important source of fish. Their culture is strongly influenced by Thailand and Laos.
